About the Author
Prologue
Camden
Camden Kalan knew every step of what was about to happen. He knew the woman, who had given her name as Lacey Forest, had wormed her way deep into the basement floors of Longshadows Academy, she was even taking a meeting with Tia McBride herself. The Forest woman had willingly gotten in over her head, and what she thought was going to be a final interview with Ms. McBride was going to be just that, in ways the innocent former schoolteacher-turned-undercover reporter could never have guessed.
Camden was dressed to regulation; black pants and long-sleeve black cotton shirt, all the better to go unnoticed as he closed in on the unsuspecting woman from behind. He was working with a popular Duo partner, Wes, who was matched in the same outfit.
She wouldn’t stand a chance.
His time with the organization hadn’t been a long stretch, just over two years. This wasn’t his first assignment, not even the first one to include Longshadows founder Tia McBride. She had revealed herself to be a woman of amazing power and personal strength, and she had set the tone for his own performance as one of her team. She expected excellence, discipline, integrity.
So did Lacey Forest, and she was about to get it.
The front door was unlocked, and Camden opened the door casually, unhurriedly. There wasn’t any need to rush. The girl was trapped.
Lacey was sitting with her back to the doors, facing Tia McBride sitting behind her desk with her back to the wall. Tia was sitting calmly, her eyes fixed on their victim even as Camden approached Lacey from behind. Lacey looked back at him and then at herself, her pretty brown eyes suddenly round with surprise and even more so with fear. Her dark brown hair brushed against her shoulders, her expression wordless and tense.
“This is where we say goodbye, Miss … Forest,” Ms. McBride said, sitting calmly behind her desk as Camden dug his fingers around Lacey’s left forearm, pulling her to her feet.
“Hey, stop it,” she cried, her voice quivering and confused. Her conservative business suit, gray and tight-fitting, skirt pinning her thighs together. “What are you doing?”
Tia asked her, “Isn’t that what you’re here to find out?” as Camden pulled Lacey to her feet and dragged her away from the chair and across the office, where Wes stood waiting.
“Nnnnoooo,” Lacey screamed, “let … me … go!”
But that was not the way to freedom, and they all knew that. Begging like that was a straight line to the dungeon, a fate the young woman would have to endure. Camden stood behind her, one hand on each upper arm, just above the elbows. She pulled hard against the two men, twisting her body, feet skidding against the concrete floor of the hallway as they dragged her to the dungeon. She strained to free her arms, her increasing panic releasing itself in a long, loud scream.
“Heeeeelp! Somebody help me! Heeeeeelp!”
But she didn’t keep up the effort. She must have researched Longshadows enough to know the basement was deep underground, entirely soundproofed, and staffed only with loyal members. If anybody did hear her, there would be nothing they could do to help even if they wanted to.
So she turned her fear against Camden, pumping that strength into her small, curvy frame, a gymnast’s short, muscular build. Her skirt rose up to reveal her white panties, garter belt, and that smooth stretch of upper thigh just above the stockings. But there was no time for her to worry about modesty.
There were plenty of other things to worry about.
“Look,” she said urgently, “I don’t know anything, I swear I don’t. I was just asking a few questions, for a little story in the paper, that’s all.” Both men said nothing. “I … if I did know anything, I wouldn’t tell anybody, I swear I wouldn’t!” But they just kept dragging her down that seemingly endless hallway, relentless and merciless, every step bringing her closer to untold torment. “Look, I’ll become one of you! Tell her, tell McBride I’ll work for you … as a spy, or I’ll recruit girls or something, I dunno … anything you want!”
Camden was not moved to pity, though he couldn’t help feel a tinge of empathy at the genuine quiver of fear in her voice, that rush of desperation in the speed of her words as her brain scrambled to devise a last-minute resolution to a story that could have only one end.
“I’ll work with you, I’ll do whatever you want! We can work together to take Tia McBride out of the picture! I could put you in charge if you want! Think about it, all that money, all that power!” But her faux optimism couldn’t contain the terror at the core of her plea, an attempt at a lighter tone collapsing in a sputter of sobs. “I know things, I do … I do … ”
But it didn’t matter, and as Lacey hung her head and they turned the corner of the hallway, her pleas came to an end. There was no longer any point, and there was no more time.
Once in the dungeon, she got her first look at what awaited her. She stopped kicking, but only long enough to take in the vast collection of machines and chairs, chains hanging from the ceiling in no fewer than half-a-dozen places.
“Oh no,” Lacey whispered, following it with another loud, “no!” and
wrenching toward the door, now closed and locked behind them. Camden pulled her grey skirt down to reveal her perfectly toned legs, yanking her stockings, garters and panties and all, down with it.
